About Us

Put together by passionate locals who scour the city for authentic and excellent experiences, the guides recognise that travellers want the tools to start exploring a destination quickly and with confidence. They also want to get a sense of what makes a place special and how its inhabitants enjoy it.

Many guides aim to be as comprehensive as possible; ours go the opposite way. Our curators spend a lot of time refining our selection so only the best venues remain. While travel information has never been more abundant, sorting and assessing it takes considerable effort. Luckie guides enable you to hone in on what’s relevant to who and where you are.

It’s our team of curators, writers and contributors that make Luckie guides unique and invaluable. We work with those who know the bar, cafe and restaurant scenes from inside out and back to front. Hospitality runs through their blood and as often as not they are pioneers as well as participants in this ever changing landscape. Their considered curation of the featured venues means you’ll discover the places where substance meets style, where the service transforms the experience to stay in your mind as a treasured memory. We hope you’ll be delighted by the venues we reveal to you and in turn we hope you’ll share this knowledge with your friends, just as we share it with you.

The Creator

Michelle has been creating and publishing niche city guides since 1998 when she created Shopping Secrets; guides to unusual and interesting shops in Melbourne and Sydney. In 2003 she released Bar Secrets Melbourne; the beloved bar guide that showed Melburnians where the most fabulous bars could be found. The popularity of this title inspired the creation of the brand Deck of Secrets which saw further titles in this unique deck of cards format released for cities and islands around the world including Ibiza, Hong Kong and London. She developed mobile apps across four platforms in the past decade and Apple featured one of the apps for their TVC “There’s an App for that”.

In 2016 she made a fresh start launching Luckie guides; an evolution of the Deck of Secrets concept.

Custom publishing is a key part of the new business and titles have been created for a major hotel as well as a destination guide for a travel company.

The Great Eateries Guide From food carts to fine dining, 52 of Melbourne’s best culinary experiences. Urban, suburban, regional and remarkable

Remember when discovering a good bar was a big deal? I do. In 2003 I created Bar Secrets Melbourne the beloved guide to the best bars in the city, back when finding 52 was a slight stretch. Now they’re more plentiful than pubs but which ones are truly great? We called on our top shelf panel of industry pros, brand ambassadors, bar pioneers and spirit makers to clue you in.

Dining out

Dining out has become a passion to rival AFL in Victoria and there’s no trend we won’t embrace or adapt. Keeping up with the constantly refreshing scene is part scavenger hunt, part steeplechase. Hybrid foods? Been there, Instagrammed that cronut, cruffin and freakshake. Eagerly awaiting the cragel and cracaron. Food trucks? Tracked ‘em down. Some have gone legit, full circle even, with permanent parking spots. Wellness? Drank juice every colour of the rainbow, scarfed the superfood salad and still had room for raw dessert. Social media made us do it.

Value tradition

Yet we also value tradition and like to go deep with our provenance. We admire the artisans and purists who do what they do with passion and integrity. And we’ll always have time for those neighbourhood bistros that consistently nail the standards, year in, year out. Since launching Deck of Secrets back in 2003, I’ve watched chefs and restaurateurs redraw Melbourne’s culinary map. They’ve pushed the boundaries, scaled the heights and made our city a bonafide food destination. This new Luckie guide also represents an evolution. We’ve consulted leading food writers and industry insiders to nominate their favourite startups and long-term loves. So on your marks…table set…go EAT!

The scene grew

They've helped the scene grow and flourish to the point where a bar almost needs a niche to stand out. These days a venue can choose to use only Australian spirits. Or amass world-class collections of gin, whisk(e)y and rum. Or serve 20 different Negronis. If you can think of it, then you'll need to be quick to open it first! Luckie Melbourne DRINKS is a highly curated bar guide offering the finest cocktail and spirit drinking experiences in Melbourne. The award winners, the ever inventive bartenders, those admired from near and far. The ones who know to stir their martinis so as not to bruise the gin and to hell with Bond. It takes more than beards, braces and waistcoats to make a great drink.
